Hillyard Seed Library

Hillyard Seed LibraryAnother perennial favorite from Hillyard. What is a seed library? It’s a little different than a traditional library because you don’t return the exact same thing you borrow.

You get seeds from the library, grow plants, harvest and dry their seeds, and then return new seeds to the library. In that way, the seeds returned are fresh and probably from your healthiest plants. Together, we create a library of seeds for plants that thrive in our community!

You can check out 6 packets of edible plant seeds and 6 packets of decorative plant seeds.

Stop by the Hillyard Library to borrow seed or ask staff for more information.

July First Friday at the Downtown Library

July kicks off with two new artists in the Downtown Library’s art gallery as well as local music group The B-Radicals welcoming summer during First Friday Artwalk on Friday, July 1.

Artists Chris Bolduc and Michaelanne Foster will host a reception starting at 5:00 pm and the music will commence at 6:30 pm. The library gallery will stay open until 8 pm for the festivities.

meme1Michaelanne Foster is an oil painter, but has been exploring the media of pen and ink, as evidenced in this series. Her current work is inspired by beautiful flora and bizarre fauna. Her website: www.michaelannefoster.com.

Her work beautifully compliments Chris Bolduc’s pen and ink drawings, which are informed by mythological storytelling and occult botanical lore. You may have seen his recent installation in one of the windows of the old Ridpath Hotel. A fun time-lapse video of that installation can be seen here: ivwands.wordpress.com/publicart/

If you haven’t heard the B-Radicals before then you’re in for a treat; this experimental rock quartet likes to say that they “inspire your being” with their music and that live is the way to see them. “Grounded in the solid framework of eclectic compositions, we playfully push our musicality in the live setting with spontaneous improvisational pieces.” – perfect for a Friday in July!
