Superhero America: The Comic-Book Character as Historical Lens

T. Andrew WahlMark your calendar for this special program. In this interactive, multimedia presentation, journalist and comic book historian, T. Andrew Wahl, explores how historical events and shifting social mores can be seen in the evolution of characters from Wonder Woman to Spider-Man.

Many people identify with a superhero. Who’s your favorite? What’s your superpower? It’s natural that humans are drawn to the heroic, the superhuman. Since the revolutionary debut of Superman in 1938, the American superhero has been a regular part of our pop culture landscape and their ideals influence daily life. This program is part of the Humanities WA Inquiring Minds series and is appropriate for tweens, teens and adults who are interested in the subject.

Junes in June - 5 Songs from Freegal

Songs by women named June seemed appropriate to share this month. When you’re putting together your summer playlists these Junes will liven up your listening.

great_girl_singersJune Christy – mostly active in the 1950s and 60s. Known for her silky-smooth vocals and work with jazz artists. You’ll find a great version of “It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing” on this album of “Great Girl Singers.”

June Hutton – an American actress and vocalist, popular with big bands during the 1940s. There’s a lovely version of “My Baby Just Cares For Me” on this album curiously titled, “The Betty Boop Music Show.”

Rubber_folkJune Tabor is an English folk singer for whom Elvis Costello wrote the song, All this Useless Beauty (not available from Freegal but available at the library). She also sings Elvis Costello’s song, “Shipbuilding” on her 2011 album, “Ashore.” It’s a sad and beautiful song about the Falkland War of 1982. Her a cappella version of “In My Life” on “Rubber Folk: A Folk Tribute to the Beatles” is quite worth the download; it’s stunning and you’ll find some other treasures on that album.

June_John_albumJune Carter Cash – Any list of songs by Junes would not be complete without June Carter Cash! The version of “Jackson” on the 1967 album, “Carryin’ On With Johnny Cash & June Carter” is a winner and features both singer’s beautiful voices (before they were married and you can sure see the spark between them in the album cover photo!). “Eight More Miles to Louisville” on an album of first ladies of country showcases just June and is FUN!

Remember, you can download five songs from Freegal every week with your library card.

Pay Fines

There are two motives for reading a book: one, that you enjoy it; the other, that you can boast about it.
