June News – Summer Reading!

Spend_more_time_readingWe want you to Spend More Time Reading this summer! The best way to accomplish that is to sign up for the library’s Summer Reading program. Here’s what you do:

  • Sign up starts today (June 1). Do it in person at any of our library branches or online here;
  • Keep your reading log (we’ll give you one once you sign up) handy to keep track of your reading;
  • Read 15 hours over the course of the summer, that’s less than 7 minutes a day!
  • Bring your completed reading log in to the library before August 31;
  • Get a free book (kids and teens) or be entered into a prize drawing (grown-ups).

There are a lot of reasons to read in the summer, but for kids and teens it’s crucially important because just the very act of reading in the summer helps prevent educational loss that happens during non-school time. Researchers call that educational loss the “Summer Slide” and there’s significant data showing that kids can lose as much as two months of educational progress if they don’t read in the summer. This is why we host Summer Reading programs every year. While we offer incentives to read, we think the real prize is the reading itself, time spent traveling to foreign lands, learning about new people, exploring other’s viewpoints – that’s the treasure in summer reading!

In between all your reading you’ll also want to check out the special programs we are hosting this summer. A full list is on our website here.

P.S. Many thanks to the Friends of the Library and the Spokane Public Library Foundation for supporting our Summer Reading program every year!

In this interactive, multimedia presentation, journalist and comic book historian, T. Andrew Wahl, explores how historical events and shifting social mores can be seen in the evolution of characters from Wonder Woman to Spider-Man. This program is part of the Humanities WA Inquiring Minds series and is appropriate for tweens, teens and adults who are interested in the subject.

One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by.
