Partnerships Make Us Stronger: PAML and SPLF bring Statista to Library Customers

pamlWhy are community partnerships so important? It’s like the old adage, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” and when partnerships are involved then both parties, plus many more people benefit. The library’s newest partnership with PAML (Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories) has resulted in the library providing access to the database, Statista. PAML wanted to make the database available to their staff and because of work they were doing with our Business Services Librarian they decided to make it available to library customers as well. The cost of the database was split between PAML and the Spokane Public Library Foundation.

David Love, Director of Marketing at PAML said that the partnership just made sense, “I knew our team would benefit from this product so that told me that many other businesses and individuals, particularly students, would also benefit so, why not just make it available to everyone? The library has always been a great resource and this was something we could do to make it even better.”

statistalogo.400x0What is Statista? Statista is one of the world’s largest statistics portals drawing data from over 18,000 sources making it the most up-to-date statistical data from around the globe. They offer charts and reports and are a great resource when you need stats to back an argument, idea or business plan.

To access Statista, you’ll need to be in one of our library buildings using our computers or using your own computer with our WiFi.

Find One Book You Want and 12 More Too!

fiction_booksOne of the great things about the Friend’s book sale is that you’ll find a bunch of books that you had forgotten you wanted to read and suddenly they are right in front of you at the sale and they’re $1 or less! It’s easy to go home with more than you thought you would because you know you’re supporting literacy in our community by shopping at the sale. That, and the great prices, will inspire you to add a few more books to your stack.

The Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale starts next week at the Downtown Library. There will be over 10,000 books to choose from. Meet Author Emily St. John Mandel

Mandel_300pxSpokane is Reading’s main event is less than two weeks away. There’s something about meeting an author and hearing from them in person that deepens our understanding of a book. Hearing about the experience that brings a book to fruition can be fascinating and often leads us to new insights about the book. For some people, if they haven’t read the book, it inspires them to do so (you don’t have to read a book to attend an author reading!).

Station_Eleven_cover300On October 29, award-winning author Emily St. John Mandel will be here for this year’s Spokane is Reading program. She will be reading from and discussing her book, Station Eleven as well as answering questions and signing copies of her book.

October 29 at 1 pm – CenterPlace Event Center (doors open at 12:15)
October 29 at 7 pm – Bing Crosby Theaer (doors open at 6:15 and an ASL interpreter will be present at this event)

Special thanks to the Friends of Spokane Public Library for their generous support of Spokane is Reading throughout the years.

Pay Fines

I have gone to them [this bookshop] for years, always finding the one book I wanted – and then three more I hadn’t known I wanted.
